From AI demo to deployed value: what a Forward Deployed Engineer does
By StarApple AI Editorial Desk
The FDE role connects real workflow needs to AI systems people can test, operate and improve.

A prototype can show what a model might do. An organisation still needs to know whether it helps a real user, fits the process, protects information and behaves well when inputs are incomplete. The work between those questions and a reliable release is where the Forward Deployed Engineer operates.
FDE, explained
An FDE, or Forward Deployed Engineer, is an applied engineer who works close to the people facing a real operational problem. The role combines software and AI engineering with discovery, workflow design, evaluation, deployment, user support and handover. The goal is a system that fits the work and can be assessed in its real context.
Applied AI engineering: where to begin
A first project might help staff search an approved knowledge base or draft a response for human review. Measure whether it saves effort without losing accuracy or making unusual cases harder to escalate. Those are project questions, not guaranteed gains.
Value comes from measured implementation
Teams need engineers who can bridge model capability and day-to-day work. FDE practice makes evaluation, privacy, security and user adoption part of engineering from the start. It also creates an explicit handover: a solution is useful when the organisation can operate and improve it.
Set a baseline before a pilot. Use representative examples, include cases where the system should decline or escalate, and measure quality as well as speed. Keep people accountable for consequential decisions, use authorised data, and document how the system can be paused or changed.
